History

Jeypore is located on the southern border of Orissa and is connected to Andhra Pradesh to the south. This city has its own historical significance and is the second-largest city after Behrampur in South Odisha. Jayepore, pronounced locally as "Joypur", literally means "City of Victory" Jeypore. It is one of the largest cities in the Koraput region of Odisha and a place of historical importance. The city was established as the capital of the kingdom of Maharaja Veer Vikrama Dev. Before the rebellion of Balram Dev III, it was the largest kingdom in Kalinga. Later, the kingdom was defeated by the East India Company and was dissolved in 1947. Historically, this ancient kingdom straddled the northern and southern regions of modern Odisha.
