History

Gopalpur is a coastal town on the Bay of Bengal in Odisha. Gopalpur is an important commercial port situated 15 Km from the city of Berhampur. The town was a little fishing village that grew into a prominent trading port. In ancient times, Gopalpur was an important port for the ancient sailors of Kalinga. Even during the First World War, it was an important military port, where soldiers once embarked on a trip to Myanmar. Gopalpur is the site of Odisha's first modern hotel, and it may also be the site of the country's first beach resort. Palm Beach Resort was built in 1914 by an Italian gentleman named Signor Maglioni to meet the needs of merchants and merchants. The hotel was acquired by Oberoi Hotel Group in 1948, which was the group's first foray into the hotel business.
