History

During the British rule of India, the Mokokchung area was part of the Naga Hills area of ​​Assam. The Mokokchung sub-district of Naga Hills was created in 1889 and has remained the same since the independence of India in 1947. The Naga Hills district has been a district of Assam until 1957 when it was merged with the Tunshan Border Department of the Border Service. Northeast (now Arunachal Pradesh) to form the centrally managed Naga Hills Tunsang area. At that time, the Mokokchung district became a district, one of three districts juxtaposed with the districts of Kohima and Tuensang. 

 The Nagaland Tunsang area was renamed "Nagaland" in February 1961, and Nagaland became the 16th state of India in December 1963. Finally, in December 1973, the new Zunheboto and Wokha districts in Mokokchung were dug, leaving the district's borders as they are today.

Facts & Culture

Mokokchung is an ancient village belonging to the Mokokchung district of Gunagar Mountain in Nagaland. The word Mokokchung literally means a group of people who leave their homes reluctantly. The story says that despite requests from other Soyim residents, a group of Soyim people settled here after leaving Soyim. Mokokchung Village is one of the largest villages in Nagaland and one of the main places where you can see the descendants and culture of the AoNaga tribe. Mokokchung is the most important city center in Nagaland after Dimapur and Koshma, and the hometown of Ao Naga. The "town" is as big as the entire area and has become a popular tourist attraction for many years. There are several clans living in this ancient town, and they speak the unique Monsen dialect. It is part of the intellectual and culturally richest area in Nagaland. 

 The most popular tourist attractions in the area include the Regional Museum, the main city park (located directly above the city center), Uman Village (considered the oldest and largest), and Ao Village. Other places to visit areMopungchukit, Chuchuyimlang, and Longkhum. Since agriculture is the main occupation in the region, the festivals during the sowing and harvest months will definitely enhance the tourist experience. Mokokchung comes to life during Christmas, New Year, and the Ao festival called Moatsu. Nagaland's intellectual and cultural capital is Mokokchung. From the end of the 19th century to the 20th century, and continuing to this day, Mo Guozhong's sons and daughters have stood out in all fields and led the country.
