History
Williamnagar is the headquarters building in the Donggaro Mountains area of Meghalaya State, one of the northeastern states of India. It is named after Lieutenant Williamson Samma, the founding prime minister of Meghalaya State. In 1976, after the former Jiaoshan area was reorganized, the town was planned around the ancient village of New Sangele on the vast plains along the New Sang River. Its location is important in history because, in 1837, the Garo people made the last major resistance to the British invasion of Garo Mountain.
