History

Once a princely state in the British Empire, Mosinram was included in the British Kingdom in the northeastern state of Meghalaya. After Britain withdrew from politics on August 15, 1947, the partition of India began. It was during this period that the former princely state of Mawsynram joined the newly independent Union of India. The history of the Kasi (the indigenous people of Sohra) dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, these people were ruled by their Khyriem tribe "Syiems (Rajas or chiefs)" on the Khasi hill. Khasi Hills was under British rule in 1883, and the last important Syiem, Tirot Sing Sieem, submitted it. The Mawsynram plateau area has received enough attention for its global rainfall, but there are more unique attractions here.

Facts & Culture

The charming city of Mosinram is considered the wettest place in the world and is 61 kilometers south of Shillong. It is a paradise for nature lovers and an ideal destination for weekend getaways. The Mawsynram Plateau area has received enough attention due to its rains all over the world, but there are more unique attractions here. The longest sandstone cave Krem Puri is found here. It takes a long descent down the side of a valley to reach the entrance. The "jaws" in Mawsynram may be Khasi's acceptance of "stone". It symbolizes the unique boulders that have been excavated from the Kasi Mountains. The town is famous for its huge production and formation of stalagmites that resemble "Shivling" shapes. Mawsynram is located in the mountainous region of East Kashi in the state of Meghalaya at 1,400 meters above sea level. The rain in Mawsynram is so strong that villagers should use the thick grass to protect their homes from thunderstorms.
