This captivating town is located 90 kilometers from Shillong in East Cassis Mountains. In 2003, it was named the cleanest town in Asia by Discovery India. Mawlynnong, also known as "God's Own Garden", was named the cleanest village in Asia in 2003 and declared the cleanest village in India in 2005. This clean village, about 90 kilometers from Shillong, is an initiative of community-based ecotourism. The community has made collective efforts to maintain the atmosphere of a clean town. The motto "Neighbors Envy, Proud Owners" fits Mawlynnong because it has earned the title of one of the cleanest villages in Asia. This is a fact that all Mawlynnong residents are proud of and the envy of other villagers. The village is very beautiful, especially in the monsoon season, surrounded by trees, waterfalls paved the way to the stream, trees and hedges are covered with many blooming orchids, which adds to the beauty of the village. Agriculture is the primary source of income for the people. They mainly grow betel nuts. Approximately 82 families live in Mawlynnong. Keeping the surrounding environment clean is an ancient tradition.
