History

Dawki is a town in Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya, India on the border of India and Bangladesh.
The Jaintia Hills tribes had their own kingdom until they were ruled by the British in the 19th century. The place became famous due to its scenic beauty and for being one of the few road borders crossing and also for the suspension bridge across the river which was constructed in 1932 and is still motorable. Jaintia Hills split into 12 provinces known as "Elaka," which are controlled by the Dolois of each province. Doloi in Nartiang is the center of power because Nartiang province is the largest and it is called UKongsan. Groups from these provinces formed the ship Jaintia Syiem, ruled by a king chosen by all the Dolovians. As there is no written record, the history of this place is transmitted from generation to generation through legends. To properly rule the different provinces, there are no divisions between the different provinces of Jaintia Hills, and all the Dolovians decide to choose a king. However, they have not been able to find a suitable person for the position of the king for several years.
