History
The Ukhrul district is home to the Tangkhul tribals, who are highly educated people. The Tangkul and other Naga tribes came to Myanmar from China, eventually traveling through countless snowy regions, mountains, and wild forests, confronting wild beasts and barbarian tribes, and finally reaching their present land. Due to the exodus of the Tangkul people from China, each Tangkul village has become a small republic like a Greek city-state. Each town has an unwritten constitution, made up of ancient customs and traditions. Except for the salt, the town of Tangkul is self-sufficient, with autonomous units ruled by hereditary or elected chiefs and assisted by a council of elders. The boss is a combination of judge, administrator, and commander. However, the story became more enlightened in the early 13th century due to the culture, trade, and sometimes turbulent relationships that arose with the people of the valley. The popular Tangkhul "Changkhom" shawl is also known as "Karaophi" in Manipur. The Tangkhul dance (pheichak) is called "Chingkheirol" in Manipur because it comes from "Chingkhei" (northeast of Imphal).
