History

It is located in the northern part of the state of Manipur, on the border with the Uhruur district to the east and the Tamanglong district to the west. To the north is the Phek district of Nagaland, and to the south is the Imphal West district. The district was established in 1969 and is known as the Northern District of Manipur. In the past, it was part of the Kingdom of Manipur, which is one of the oldest surviving kingdoms in India. Most of the culture and traditions of the people developed during this period. This place was named after Senapati Tikendrajit Singh, who belonged to the royal family of Manipur. Legend has it that it was here that Senapati Tikendrajit Singh (Senapati Tikendrajit Singh) greeted the British political agent, Major General Sir James Johnstone when he entered Manipur (James Johnstone). When the British tried to seize the government of Manipur in 1891, the young prince fought valiantly against the British. After taking power, the brave prince was sentenced to death. Thus, the history of the region began a new chapter, as it became an important place for Great Britain to consolidate its empire in the Far East of the subcontinent.
