History

It was initially ruled by Kin Khaba, and Imphal was later ruled by the leader of Pakhangba. The Ningtouba tribe clan originated at that time and expanded rapidly. Kangra Palace was built by King Kaganba and his son Kunchoba. During the Anglo-Manipur War, the British demolished the palace. During the reign of Maharaja Bhagazendra, a series of invasions took place in Burma. However, with the assistance of Maharaj Gambhir Singh, the kingdom was able to endure. The peaceful state of Imphal was disturbed when the British started intervening in the affairs of the royal family. The British hanged the most chivalrous minister Senapati Tikendrajit which triggered a rebellion among the locals. The British were able to suppress the people and won the Anglo Manipur War in 1891.

During World War II, the Battle of Imphal took place in 1944, Japan attacked Imphal in order to take over the British colony. They were beaten, though, and were forced to withdraw. The attack made the British aware of Imphal's strategic military position.
