History
Chandel, also known as Lamka, is a small area, but it is a picturesque area in the northeast of Manipur. It is one of the nine main regions of the state and the second least populous region. It is located on the international border separating India and Myanmar and is known as the gateway to Myanmar. It is about 40 miles from Imphal, passing NH39. In August 1983, the names of all districts in Manipur were changed. The nomenclature adopted the names of all district headquarters in each district and named their respective districts. Therefore, the Tengnoupal district became Chandel district with Chandel as district headquarters.
