History

King Kyamba started the regular worship of Lord Vishnu at Bishnupur which is about 27 kilometers from the main city of Imphal. The king built a Vishnu temple there which is a protected monument. A picturesque village at the foot of the mountain, it gracefully stretches down the valley. There is a Vishnu temple in Ramang Cave, believed to be named after him.

There are several opportunities for sightseeing and exploring here. Boating is available at Loukoi Pat, as is a visit to Red Mountain, where British and Japanese forces battled during WWII. Admire the beauty of Sadu Chiru Waterfall and the natural wonders of Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. The majority of people living in Bishnupur are the Mets, the most prominent ethnic group in Manipur. They believe in Hinduism and are Vaisnawis. There are several other tribes and communities in Bishnupur, such as Maitai Gar (Manipur Muslim), Naga, Kabui, Gantt, Kom, etc. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the Bishnubs. They also hold various festivals throughout the year, and the most popular is the Leha Roba Festival.  One of the Manipuris’ favorite foods is Ngari, which is actually a fermented fish. It has a unique smell, but it is popular because of its taste.
