History

Before the Ramayana period, Nasik was known as Panchawati. Nasik has mythological, historical, social, and cultural significance. This city is located on the Godavari River and is one of the holiest places for Hindus in the world. The place has mythological significance as Lord Rama stayed here during his 14 years of exile. In Kritayuga, Nashik is "Trikantak", in Dwaparyuga it is "Janasthana", and later in Kuliyuga it becomes "Navashikh" or "Nashik". From 1487 AD, the province was ruled by the Mughal dynasty and was called Gurshanabad. It was also the home of Emperor Akbar, who wrote extensively about Nasik in EineAkbari. During the Shivaji regime, it was also called "the place of bravery". When Peshvas took over in 1751, the old name was restored. Nasik surrendered to Britain on April 19, 1818.
