Nanded

History

Nanded is a historic city whose name is believed to have originated from the Nandi, Lord Shiva’s vehicle of consciousness. Lord Shiva is also believed to have performed penance on the banks of River Godavari that flows in the Nanded region. A beguiling mix of ancient and modern, Nanded is one of the oldest and historic cities that came under the rule of various dynasties such as the Satvahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Kakatiyas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Adilshahis, and finally the Mughals. Situated on the banks of River Godavari, it is famous today for its undisputed highlight, the establishment of GurudwaraHazur Sahib, where Guru Gobind Singh Ji – the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, breathed his last, devoting his entire life to the service of mankind. The city also houses various Sufi shrines, a beautiful waterfall of Sahastrakud, and the Kandhar Fort. A huge statue of Kshetrapala is located here. Now in a broken condition, the statue was estimated to be taller than 50 feet. The Chalukya era Hottal temple near Deglur is also worth a visit.

It is located on the Godavari River and is today famous for its undisputed climax, the establishment of GurudwaraHazur Sahib, where the tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh Ji swallowed his last breath and dedicated his life Gives humanity. Gurudwara is considered the biggest attraction of the city. The presence of Hazur Sahib, one of the five Sikh takthas, made Nanded, the second most sacred city among the Sikhs. The city also has various Sufi shrines, beautiful Sahastrakud waterfalls, and Kandhar fortress. There is a huge Kshetrapala statue here. It is now in a broken state, and the statue is estimated to be over 15 m high. Another popular tourist attraction is the Kaleshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kandahar, Kunthaligiri, and Dharur are ancient fortresses and also attract a large number of tourists. This historic city is also rich in natural resources such as granite, calcium, magnesium, and limestone. It is both a government center and a market town in the surrounding agricultural area. Popular crops grown in the area include cotton, sugarcane, soybeans, sorghum, and bananas. Nanded also has a regional cotton research center that supports the cotton-growing industry in the region.
