History

Lonavala and neighboring Khandala are Shuangshan Stations at an altitude of 622 meters (2,041 feet), located in the Sahyadri Mountains that divide the Deccan Plateau and the Kankan Coast. The name Lonavala comes from the Sanskrit Canvasvli, which refers to many caves near Lonavala, such as Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves, and Bedsa. Lonavala was part of the Yadava dynasty. Later, the Mughal people realized the strategic importance of the area and controlled the area for a long time. The fortresses and "Mavala" fighters in the area played an important role in the history of the Maratha Empire and the Peshwar. In 1871, Lord Elphinstone, then Governor of the Presidential Palace of Mumbai, discovered the mountain stations in Lonavala and Khandala. It is located in the Pune district of Maharashtra state in western India. This mountain station is located 96 kilometers east of the metropolis of Mumbai and 64 kilometers west of what is now Pune. Therefore, its deep location on the Pune Highway in Mumbai makes Lonavala suitable for the two cities that are most smoothly connected by the highway.
