History

The history of Kolhapur can be traced back to Maurya Period, in the beginning, Andhra ruled the city after them and the third dynasty to govern the region was the Chalukya - Rashtrakuta rulers. The Chulakya kings called it " Dakshin Kashi" or " Mahateerth". The  Chalukya King Gandharadivya completed the construction of the famous Mahalaxmi Temple. Under the Chalukyas King Vikramaditya(second) , the wealth of Kolhapur started growing. In 1659, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj conquered Panhalad and made Kolhapur part of the Maratha Kingdom. The city played a great role in the freedom fights of Shivaji Maharaj. After the demise of Shivaji, his wife crowned Shahu Maharaj on the throne of Kolhapur. During the period of Maharani Tarabai, the city got the status of capital.

Its modern development is simply fascinating. Due to abundant natural resources, such as water, fertile soil, minerals, natural vegetation, and animal wealth. It is one of the most advanced agricultural areas in Maharashtra and is known for its leading agricultural and industrial areas. It is also a leader in the manufacture of engineered products, refined sugar, and textiles. Today, Kolhapur prides itself on being an important center of the Marathi film industry.
