Amravati

History

The old name of Amravati is "Udumbravati", and its original form is "Umbravati". "Amravati" has been known for centuries by this name. Amravati is said to be named after the ancient Ambadevi temple.

Ancient evidence for the existence of Amravati can be obtained from the stone inscription at the base of the marble statue of the god Adinath (Jain God) Rishabhnath. This shows that these statues were placed here in 1097. In the 14th century, there was a famine (drought) in Amravati, people left Amravati and went to Gujrat and Malwa. The locals returned to Amravati a few years later, resulting in a sparse population. Muslims and Hindus live together here. In 1722, Chhatrapati Shahoo Maharaj introduced Amravati and Badnera to Shri Ranoji Bhosle. At that time, Amravati was called 'Bhosle ki Amravati'.Ranoji Bhosle rebuilt and prospered the city. British leading writer Wellesley once camped at Amrawati, which is still recognized as a camp by the Amrawati.

Gavilgad Fort was conquered by the British on December 15, 1803. Around 1805, Pandharies attacked the city of Amravati.

Facts & Culture

The city of Amravati is located above 340 m above sea level. The Pohara and Chirodi Hills lie to the east of the city. It is the main center in the west of Vidarbha. It is located on the Mumbai-Kolkata highway. Maltekdi is one of the hills, located in the city. The height of Maltekdi is about 60 m, and the large Shri Shivaji Maharaj Marathon statue is placed on top of the mountain.

There are two lakes in the east of the city, namely Chhatri Talao and Wadali Talao. The city is famous for the Goddess Amba temple, Lord Krishna Temple, Shri Venkateshwara. Other places near Amravati are Melaghat Tiger Reserve and two museums. The town with its rich historical background is a popular place to visit.
