History
The history of Panna dates back to hundreds of years and showcases the glorious past of the region. Resonant with the magnificence of royal dynasties, fierce battles & the struggle for independence, the district of Panna in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has innumerable tales to narrate. The earliest reference of Panna district is found in religious epics like Ramayana and Indian Puranas. As mentioned in the Vishnu & Bhavishya Purana the ancient name of Panna district was Padmawati-Puri, but in Valmiki Ramayana it was called as Kilkila-Khand by Sugreev, while in Shrimad Bhagwat the city was named as Kilkila Pradesh.
Originally a Gond Tribe settlement till the thirteenth century, the present day Panna district was formed out of the princely states of Ajaigarh and Panna. It gained importance when Raja Chhatrasal Bundela made the city his capital. During the 19th century it went into the hands of Chandelas, and then became part of a princely state of British India. The then ruler Raja Nirpat Singh helped the British East India Company during the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, as a result of which the Britishers conferred the title "Maharaja" on him. The people of Panna actively participated in During the freedom struggle and when India gained Independence Maharaja Mahendra Yadvendra Singh surrendered to the Government of India. Thus Panna District became part of the new Indian state of Vindhya Pradesh, which was later merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956. Since then Panna city is making rapid progress in terms of infrastructure & economic development.
