History

It is believed that the name Pachmarhi is derived from the Hindi words Panch ("five") and Marhi ("cave"). According to legend, these caves were built by the five Pandawa brothers of the Mahabharata era during their thirteen years of exile. The cave is located on the mountain and provides an excellent viewing point. Before the British, the Pachmarhi area belonged to the Kingdom of Gond Bhagvat Singh, although it was not a densely populated village or city at the time. In 1857, British Army Captain James Forsyth and Subhedar Major Nathoo Ramji Powar, who was later appointed kotwal, discovered the plateau in the Pachmarhi area while his troops were following the route of Jhansi. Pachmarhi also serves as the summer capital of the central provinces. The forest around the city is home to many rare plant species. UNESCO added Pachmarhi park to its list in 2009.
