History

The picturesque town of Orchha on the Beva River was built in the 16th century. By the 18th century, the powerful Maratha army successfully conquered all Bundela states except Orchha. In 1783, Tehri (now Tikamgal) became the capital of Orchha. Tehri is 40 miles south of Orchha. The famous Fort Tekamgarh was built in Tehri. In 1874, Maharaja Pratap Singh (born 1854) ascended the throne of Orchha and experienced the greatest development under his rule. Most irrigation work and other related tasks were carefully planned and supervised by Maharaja Pratap Singh. At the beginning of the 20th century, Orchha was the oldest and most prosperous state in Bundelkhand. After independence, Orchha became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
