History

The historic city of Gwalior has been ruled by various empires from Tomars, Mughal Empire, Marathas, and Scindias. From being the winter capital to the princely state of British, Gwalior enjoyed the status of an important administrative center. It got its name from the Fort which was located on a hill.  Ranoji Sindhia laid the foundation of the  Gwalior state in the 17th Century. The city flourished under the Scindia rulers until it was captured by the British. It was one of the most famous cities in Madhya Pradesh for its magnificent palaces, ancient temples, and medieval fortresses. The city is known for its impressive history and rich cultural heritage and is also the birthplace of the great musician Tansen. The huge Gwalior Fort, also known as the capital of the fort, was once the seat of several kingdoms in northern India. This spectacular hill offers panoramic views of the entire city, adding a charming aura to this exciting city. Gwalior is a city with a long history, built by King Surajsan, is the seat of India's most prominent royal family.

Gwalior is famous for its majestic hilltop fortress, known as the "Pearl of the Indian Fortress". Historically, this city has been the cradle of the dynasties that ruled it for many years. Its influence is clearly visible in many imperial buildings that dominate the urban landscape. In a sense, Gwalior still retains the majesty of the Middle Ages. Gwalior Fort is an incredible sandstone structure and is called 'The Pearl Of Fortresses of Hind' and is a popular tourist attraction. Jai Vilas Palace has the world’s largest carpet, which has been woven for nearly 12 years, as well as two of the world’s largest chandeliers, each weighing 3.5 tons. The wealth of this city amazes everyone. On one side is the megalithic Jain temple that appeared out of nowhere on the hillside, and on the other is the tomb of Miyan Tansen. The city is known for its impressive history and rich cultural heritage and is also the birthplace of the great musician Tansen. Scindia Museum with a collection of weapons, sculptures, jewelry, and swords of Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb adds to the list. Gujari Mahal, Pratihara Vishnu Shrine are several other places worth visiting in Gwalior. Gwalior enjoys an unrivaled reputation in Sangeet and has preserved Indian traditions and rich music for many years. Gwalior is also the place of origin of one of the most popular Indian classical music styles. Legendary classical musicians Tan Sen and Baiju Bawra belong to the Gwalior school of school. There are a number of Fairs and festivals celebrated in Gwalior every year, the most famous being the Tansen Music Festival that attracts a big crowd of music lovers.
