History

The name Wayanad comes from "Vayal Nadu, the man in the rice fields". In ancient times, this land was ruled by Rajas of the Vedic tribe. Later, Wayanad came under the rule of Pazhassi Rajas of the Royal Kottayam Dynasty. When Hyde Ali became the ruler of Mysore, he invaded Wayanad and blocked his way. During the Tipu era, Wayanad restored the royal Kottayam dynasty. But after he reached the Sreerandapattam truce with the British, Tipp handed over all the Malabar to the British. Wayanad fell into the hands of the British and thus began a new turning point in the history of the region. The British opened the plateau to grow tea and other cash crops. The road passes the dangerous slopes of Wayanad from Calicut and Teliceri. These roads extend to the city of Mysore and through Kudalur to Ooty. The road facilities provide people living outside of Wayanad opportunities to move and settle in these jungle areas. In 1980, North and South Wayanad merged to form the current Wayanad District.
