The Malappuram district has a rich and vibrant history. The Zamorin military headquarters in Kozhikode has been the scene of many Mappila (uprisings against the British East India Company in Kerala) from 1792 to 1921 ancient times. Malappuram literally means the land on the mountain, and the area is enriched by the big three the Chaliyar, Kadalundi, and Bharathapuzha rivers that cross it. Malappuram borders the Western Ghats to the east and the Arabian Sea to the west. It has a long history of the Zamorin people belonging to Kozhikode who ruled the area for a long time. The region has also seen several local revolts against British rule and was once an important center for Hindu learning and Islamic philosophy.
