History

During the British era, Eravikulam and Rajamalai were owned by the North Travancore Land Planting Association. This special area was later taken over by Kannan Deven Hill Produce Corporation. The area is marked by the company as an exclusive private hunting area. According to some research conducted by the British in this area, it was found that this mountainous area is suitable for tea plantations. In 1936, the Rajamalai area was declared a wildlife sanctuary by British rulers. It should be noted that the existing reserve was only established in 1975. The location of the reserve was upgraded to national park status in 1978. The name of the area is derived from the Malayalam word Idukki, which means narrow canyon.

Facts & Culture

The Idukki is a town with immense tranquility and natural beauty. The region has a number of waterfalls and man-made dams. Idukki's specialty lies in the 650-foot-long, 550-foot-high arch dam across Kuravan Kurathi Mountain, which is the largest in the country. Anamudi is the highest peak in India, located south of the Himalayas and also in Idukki. Thoommankuthu falls is a famous seven-step waterfall with seven water cascades and pools. The area with several caves and rocks offers many adventure activities like rock climbing, camping, etc. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary and Thattekad Bird Sanctuary with rare species are worth a visit. Hill view Park Nandukani and Kalvari or Calvary Mount provide a spectacular view of the Idukki Reservoir and quaint villages.

Culture in Idukki is mixed because it is made up of immigrants from other parts of Kerala and local tribes. The existence of a large number of tribal populations is unique to the Idukki area. Kovimara, Katapana near Idukki, is the home of Kovimara Rajamana, one of the tribal kings who still rule India.
