History

It is generally believed that Udupi's name is derived from his name Tulu Odipu. In turn, the name Tulu is related to a temple in Malpe, dedicated to Vadabhandshvara. According to legend, the moonlight was dimmed by the curse of King Dasha. Dasha's 27 daughters (27 stars in Indian astrology) were married to the moon. The moon prayed to Lord Shiva to restore its original brightness. Lord Shiva was satisfied with the moon's prayer and restored its brightness. Therefore, according to this story, Udupi means "king of the stars", the land of the moon.
