History

With the exception of 40 years in the 18th century when Haydar Ali and Tipu Sultan ruled de facto, Mysore was the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore until 1950. The state of Mysore continued to be ruled by Maharaja Ss Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar until Mysore became part of the Republic of India in 1950. Today, the city of Mysore is the seat of the Mysore district. The city of Mysore is also known as the "Palace City" and the "Ivory City". The famous Chamundi Hill (Chamundi Hill) in the southeast is related to the name of the city in mythology. Mysore is ruled by the demonized Mahasura, a buffalo-headed monster. As a result, the name of this place appeared in the magical city of Maha. The demon was killed by the goddess Chamundi Shwari, whose temple is on the Chamundi hill. Mahishura later became Mahisuru and was eventually called Maisuru, which is its current name in Kannada.
