History

Hassan is known as the temple building capital of Karnataka, 187 kilometers from Bangalore. Hasan's name comes from the name of the presiding god Hasan Baba, which means "smiling mother" in Ghanaian. Hassan was part of the Mauryan empire dating back to 300 BC. Saint Bhadrabahu brought Jainism into Karnataka here during the 3rd B.C. The great king Chandragupta Maurya was Bhadrabahu's disciple and came with him to Shravanabelagola. Historians discovered many inscriptions from the Hoysala Period which threw light on the ruling powers over the region. Hasan was considered as the main seat of the Hoysala Empire and reached its epitome of glory during those times. Vijayanagar empire defeated Hoysalas but gradually Hassan came under the rule of Wodeyars of Mysore. Hassan reached its epitome of glory under the Mysore Kingdom and especially under Tipu Sultan. After Tipu Sultan passed away the British Raj took over the rule and transformed it into a Princely state.
