History

Hampi an ancient historical site was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th Century. The chronicles left by the Persian and European travelers, especially the Portuguese, said that Hampi was a prosperous, rich, and magnificent city near the Tongabadella river, with numerous temples, farms, and commercial markets. By 1500 AD, Hampi Vijayanagara was the world's second-biggest medieval city, after Beijing, and possibly the richest metropolis in India, drawing traders from Persia and Portugal. The Vijayanagar Empire was defeated by the Muslim Sultanate League; its capital was conquered, sacked, and destroyed by the Sultanate army in 1565, and Hampi has lain in ruins ever since.
