History

Chikmagalur is where the Hoysala kings began and spent the first years of their reign. According to a legend, it was at Sosevur, now identified with Angadi in Mudigere Taluk that Sala, the founder of the Hoysala dynasty, killed the legendary tiger, immortalized in the Hoysala crest.]It is known that Veera Ballala II (1173 – 1220 CE), the great king of the Hoysala empire, has built the Amriteshwara temple at Amrithapura in Tarikere Taluk.

Over the generations, several wise men and pundits have found peaceful sanctuaries amongst the quiet regions of Chikmagalur. The Southern Dravidian language, Kannada is predominantly spoken in Chikmagalur. The district is stippled with many spiritual places and traditions associated with tales from the great legends like the Ramayana and the Mahabarata. Moreover, the district takes pride in the flourishing presence of Bharatanatyam, the Indian classical dance. Besides, one can enjoy the folk drama, Yakshagana in which the actors play the characters from the legends and Puranas.
