History

The legends describe Bidar as the ancient " Vidarbha region" where Vidhur(character in Hindu text Mahabharata) lived. The place had been under the rule of Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Kadambas in the earlier times. In the 15th century, Bidar was the capital of Bahamanii Kings and one of the most prosperous cities of South India. After the last Bahmani ruler, Amir Barid ruled Bidar. Bidar was ruled by Bidar Sultanate from the 15th to 16th Century. The city became part of Hyderabad state from 1724 to 1948. Bidar became part of Mysore state in 1956 and is a famous district in Karnataka today.

Bidar district lying in the heart of the Deccan Plateau was named so after the bamboo trees found there in abundance. The Bidar is a mix of several ethnic groups right from the Dravidians and Aryans to Turks, Iranians, Afghans, and Arabs. Bidar Fort built by the Bahama Kings is a major attraction here with the most remarkable water supply system called Karez. Basavakalyan also called Kalyani was the capital of the Chalukyas and a social and cultural centre during their rule. Jalsangvi, Takhat Mahal, Gagan Mahal, Diwan ai- aam, Rangeen Mahal, Shahi Hamam etc. 108 feet high statue of saint Basaveshwara is the most formidable structure here. Bidar is the most famous for Bidri Handicraft and its rich history. The city is also a Sikh Pilgrimage.
