Dhanbad

History

Since the Stone Age, people have lived in this region. Discovered bronze tools from the Bronze Age. The region entered the Iron Age in the middle of the second millennium BC. The area was controlled by the Maurya Empire and was conquered by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 17th century. With the decline of the Mughal dynasty, the area remained under the local ruler of the Chero caste and others until it was conquered by the British East India Company in the late 18th century.

Dhanbad boasts of some great historical sites and natural wonders. The major attractions are the Birsa Munda Park, Deer Park, Bird Sanctuary, Maithon lake, Rahalla Falls, Hot springs, Kalyaneshwari Temple, Jagannath Temple, etc. Dhanbad has a great mix of different cultures and people. Bengali, Bihar, and the locals make up a large proportion. Dhanbad has historically had substantial groups of Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Malayali, Telugu, and Marwari Rajasthani residents. Some of the longest festivals observed in Dhanbad include Vishwakarma Puja, Saraswati Puja, Durga Puja, Chhath, Deepawali, Holi, Eid, Moharram, Gurupurnima, Sarhul, and Christmas. The Patkar paintings are popular paintings from the region and are the oldest tribal paintings in India. Bamboo crafts are also very popular in Dhanbad because people in the area make a variety of objects, including baskets, containers, fishing gear, hunting equipment, and other thin and strong bamboo-shaped household items.
