History
Spiti Valley is a cold Himalayan valley with a part of the desert facing northeast of Himachal Pradesh. The name "Spiti" means the land between Tibet and India. The valley was recognized as a subregion in 1960 and its headquarters is in Caza. From the name Lahaul & Spiti, it is clear that the area includes two different mountains, one is called Lahaul and the other is called Spiti. Spiti Valley is the seat of the Mahayana (Vajrayana) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Padmasambhava brought Buddhism to this valley in the 9th century. Since then, the people of this valley have followed religion of non-violence and compassion. Later, in the 11th century AD, Rinchen Tsangpo consolidated the Buddhist foundation of the region. Under his guidance, many monasteries were established in the area.
