History

Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, is known as the "Queen of the Hills" due to its beautiful scenery and beautiful surroundings. It is also the most populous city in Himachal Pradesh. The quiet beauty of Shimla attracts many tourists from all over the world. In the 18th century, most of the area occupied by the city of Shimla today was densely covered with forests. The only civilization is the Jaku Temple and some scattered houses. The area is called "Simla" and is named after the Hindu goddess Shyamala Devi, who is the incarnation of Kali. The present-day Shimla area was invaded and occupied by Nepal’s Bhimsantapa in 1806. After the Indo-Nepal War, the British East India Company took control of the area under the Sugali Treaty. In 1864, Simla was declared the summer capital of India. In 1903, a railway line was built between Kalka and Shimla. The KalkaShim narrow gauge railway line was completed in 1903 and promoted the development of the city. After independence, Simla was originally the capital of Punjab. After Himachal Pradesh was established in 1966, it was designated as the capital of Himachal Pradesh.
