History

Mandi got her name from Sage Mandav, who meditated here. Mandi is the second-largest city in Himachal Pradesh after Shimla. The current district of Mandi was formed on April 15, 1948, by the merger of the two princely states of Mandi and Suket, when the state of Himachal Pradesh was created. The district has not undergone any change in its jurisdiction since the district was established. Bahu Sen, who founded Mandi Town in 1527 AD, was the capital of the former Mandi state and the seat of the present-day Mandi district. Ajbar Sen was the first great ruler of Mandi. He was probably the first to adopt the name, Raja. He consolidated the territories inherited from him and added new ones that he had taken from his neighbors. He built a palace here and adorned it with four towers. He also built the temple of Bhut Nath and his Rani built the one of Trilok Nath. The entire history of the two states of Mandi and Suket is plagued by wars with each other and with other neighboring states.
