History

Dharamsala is located in the Kangra Valley in the Dhauladal Mountains, it became the capital of the Kangra district in 1852 and is one of the most important hill stations on the tourist map of India. In 1960, the Prime Minister of India granted this land to the Tibetans in exile, and Dharamsala became the new home of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile. Now it has become the center of Tibetan activities, with numerous organizations, monasteries, schools and more than 8,000 resident Tibetans.

The town has made its mark in some of the famous tourist places in India due to the presence of the Dalai Lama and its picturesque natural beauty. The upper Dharamshala is home to Mcleodganj, the tsuglagkhang complex is the official home to the Dalai Lama and is a wonderful glimpse of Tibetan Culture. The famous Namgyal Monastery a learning and cultural center for Buddhists is one of its kind in India. Gyuto Monastery is another popular site for Buddhists. The rock-cut temples at Masrur are some other marvels to see here. Dharamshala produces one of the best green teas in India the Kangra tea. The place with several lush green tea gardens boasts of many types like black tea, oolong tea, masala tea, and teas now. Dharamshala is surrounded by dense coniferous forests and is a starting point to a number of popular treks of the country. The triund trek offers some of the most stunning views of the Kangra valley. The trekkers get to enjoy the scenic beauty of the lakes Dal and Kareri. The culture of Dharamshala reflects the religious beliefs and devout beliefs of the Kumani people who live a simple life away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. This is crucial because the multicultural culture has been reliably separated from the mall. Now it has become the center of Tibetan activities, with numerous organizations, monasteries, schools, and more than 8,000 resident Tibetans.
