Facts & Culture

Due to its special status in the Hindu collective consciousness, Sidhpur is known as the "Kashgar (Varanasi) of the West". The city is a respected destination, flanked by temples, Kunde, ashrams, and other holy buildings. The living space of the Bohra community or the so-called "Bohra Havelis" represents the nostalgic vision directly from Dickenson's novels. The wealthy Bohra built these Victorian mansions in the late 19th and late 20th centuries to emulate the European way of life. Each house, like an old European house, has a combination of letters that represents the owner's initials. Raja Siddhraj built a magnificent temple in the 12th century, dedicated to Lord Shiva, called "Rudra Mahalaya". Among the five most sacred and oldest lakes in India, Bindu Sarova Lake is located in Sidhpur. According to Hinduism, just as offerings to ancestors should be in Gaya, offerings corresponding to maternal ancestors should also be in Sidpur. In addition, there are only five Swayambhu Lord Shiva temples in India, and they are all in Sidhpur. Every year in Katiq month (the first month of the Indian calendar), the traditional Sidpur Camel Festival is held here. This is a bull market, attended by locals and tribal members from surrounding towns and villages. Camels and horses are carefully decorated by their owners to display, buy or sell them during the fair.
