History

Bharuch is an ancient city in Gujarat at the mouth of the Narmada river. It is a shipbuilding center and seaport on the former compass coastal trade route to West Point, perhaps from the time of the Pharaohs. At the end of the European Middle Ages, the Greeks, numerous Persian empires, Roman republics and emperors, and other centers of Western culture were all familiar with Bharuch. In the 3rd century, the port of Bharuch was called Barugaza. Arab merchants entered Gujarat through Bharuch to do business. The British and Dutch (Valandas) realized the importance of Baruch and established their business center here. At the end of the 17th century, it was looted twice but soon resurfaced. Subsequently, the proverb "Bhangyu Bhangyu Toye Bharuch" was translated as "Although it was washed away by the tide of time, it is still Bharuch".

Facts & Culture

As a commercial warehouse, coastal transportation restrictions made Bharuch the conventional terminal of several mixed trade routes in the legendary Middle Eastern and Western spice and silk trade. During British rule, it was officially called a broach. For centuries, Bharuch has been the home of the Gujarati Bhargav Brahmin community. The lineage of the community can be traced back to Maharshi Bhrigu rishi and Bhagwan Parshuram, who are considered to be the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The Bhargav community still manages a large number of public trusts in the city. As one of the largest industrial areas including Ankleshwar GIDC, it is sometimes referred to as the chemical capital of India. This city has chemical factories, textile factories, long-staple cotton, dairy products, and so on. There is the largest liquid cargo terminal in Gujarat. It is also home to a number of international corporations, including Videocon, BASF, Reliance, and Safari Construction Equipments Pvt. Ltd. Bharuch is sometimes called "Kanam Pradesh" (black soil) due to the unique color of its soil (which is also ideal for growing cotton). Bharuch is a famous shopping center for salted peanuts.
