History
Sirpur, also known as Shripur, Sripura or Sripur (literally "the city of the auspicious, prosperous and Lakshmi") in ancient Indian writings and inscriptions, is an important archaeological site along the Mahanadi River. Sirpur was the capital of the ancient Panduvanshi dynasty. The site is of great importance due to its famous Ramayana and Lakshmana temples and sites related to Shiva, sexuality, Buddhism, and Jainism. After 1950, especially after 2003, excavation of the site resulted in 22 Shiva temples, 5 Vishnu temples, 10 Buddhist temples, 3 Jain temples, 6th and 7th-century markets, and snanakund (bath). The site displays a wide range of fusions, where Buddhist and Jain statues or motifs are mixed with the temples of Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi. The memoirs of the Chinese traveler Xuanzang mentioned that the site was the site of a monastery and a temple. It was visited by Alexander Cunningham, a colonial official from British India in 1872. His report on the Lakshmana temple at Silpur has attracted international attention.
Facts & Culture
Sirpur has extensive experience in traditional cultural heritage and architecture. The archaeological remains are still the pride of the region. The Buddha Viharas of Sirpur are older than Nalanda. The city of Silpur is mentioned in ancient epigraphs dating from the 5th to 8th centuries AD. Silpur is drained by the clear waters of Mahanadi and faces the Banawapara Wildlife Sanctuary to the northeast. It is a small town 84 kilometers away from the capital Raipur. From Raipur, you will arrive at Arang and from there you will travel to Tumgaon. A small road from here to the north leads to Silpur. It is a rich experience to see how life in these quiet small towns is spent without being affected by the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Lakshmana Temple is one of the most popular places in this town, and the architecture of this temple has been a source of inspiration for many architects. The Baleshwar temple is believed to have been lost, and the temple was only recently excavated. It is named after king Mahashivgupt Balarjun who built the temple. The Rama temple is one of the oldest temples and is believed to be dedicated to Ram and Lakshman. This is a Buddhist temple built by Bhikkhu Anand Prabhu in the 8th century, commonly known as Silbur Buddhist Temple. Not far from Lakshmana Temple, Teevarde is a Buddhist monastery with Buddhist artwork, statues, and Hindu themes such as the history of Panchatantra. The ASI Museum houses a large
