History

The District is situated in the fertile plains of the Chhattisgarh Region.  Dhamtari district was officially formed in1998 dividing the Raipur district currently the capital of Chhattisgarh along with Mahasamund.  As a result, the boundaries of the Raipur district were converted into the districts  Raipur, Mahasamund, and Dhamtari. The city of Dhamtari lies in the central part of the state of Chhattisgarh in east-central India. It is located in the southern part of the Chhattisgarh Plain, west of the Mahanadi River. It is a popular tourist attraction in the Dhamtari district, about 15 kilometers from Dhamtari and 90 kilometers from Raipur. The reservoir straddles the Mahanadi River and offers many water sports, Virgin Islands, and more. Also known as Ravishankar Dam, it has become a must-see during the monsoon, with picturesque islands and rich flora and fauna.

Dhamtari has fascinating natural beauty and a vast wildlife sanctuary and is famous for its traditional folk culture, which adds uniqueness to the area. There are many tourist attractions in Dhamtari. The famous Ravishankar Dam, also known as Gangrel Dam, is famous for the sunset which attracts many picnic lovers every year. It receives tourists from Chhattisgarh and other states, especially during the monsoon period. Madamsilli dam is another famous spot here.

Sitanadi Wildlife Tiger Sanctuary is a popular tourist attraction. The Satpura mountain range, commonly known as Sihawa Pahad, is a major tourist attraction. The Bilaimata Temple is a respected shrine dedicated to the goddess Durga. Dhamtari is also famous for its folk culture. The Suwa or Soowa dance also called the parrot dance is one of the main dance forms of the Chhattisgarh tribal women. Karma Dance has a religious meaning because it is performed in a very religious way. "Kalam" is a sacred tree worshiped by the locals in Chhattisgarh. In this form of tribal dance, the dancers come together to form a large circle.  The dance reflects the rich social heritage and personalized heritage of indigenous tribal gatherings in the area.
