History
Tawang is believed to be named after the magnificent Tawang Monastery located on the edge of the western ridge of Tawang Town. Ta means horse, and Wang means chosen. According to legend, the site of the current monastery was chosen by a horse of Lod Gyatso. At that time, he was looking for a suitable place to build the monastery, but he could not find a suitable place. So he finally decided to sit down and pray for divine guidance. After praying, he opened his eyes and found that his horse was missing. Then, tired, he went out to search for his horse and found it on the top of a mountain named Tanamandkang, where it was once the palace of King Krawangpo. The Merah Lama Lord Gyatso believed that this was a good sign and decided to start the construction of the monastery with the help of people. Therefore, the temple was founded at the end of 1681 by the Merah Lama Lord Gyatso. However, there is another belief derived from the name Tawang. The great treasure hunter, the Vuma Linpa Tertön, gave Dante and Kagyu initiations, so this place is called Tawang. Ta is short for Tamdin Wang, which means enlightenment.
