History

Bezawada (called Vijayawada at the time) was founded around 626 AD. There is a legend that says that Arjuna, the hero of the epic Mahabharata, prayed on the top of Indrakeela and received the blessing of Lord Shiva. The name "Vijayawada" is derived from the word "Vijay" victory. In the early 16th century, diamond mines were discovered near Vijayawada on the Krishna River.

Facts & Culture

Vijayawada is full of tourists from all over the world. The panoramic lake of ts and the three canals that run through the city give Vijayawada a Venetian look. Kanakadurga, the goddess of power, wealth, and mercy, is considered the main god of Vijayawada. The temple of Lord Maleswara is also located in the city. Adi Sankara is said to have visited this temple and installed Sri Chakra here. During the Dussehra festival, special celebrations will be held here. The Gandhi Pagoda is located on the Gandhi Mountain, formerly known as Orshan. Gandhi Memorial Library, Sound and Light Show, and Planetarium are other attractions. From the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy the panoramic view of Vijayawada. Mogalarajapuram cave is another interesting place. There are three cave temples dating from the 5th century AD, and one of them is well preserved.


The other famous cave is Undavalli Cave, about 8 kilometers from Vijayawada, which was excavated in the 7th century. In these caves, a huge Vishnu, lying down, is magnificent. The famous Narosingha Shrine is one of the nine incarnations of Vishnu and is located on Mangalajiri Mountain, 12 kilometers south of Vijayawada. Another place of religious importance in Vijayawada is the Hazrat Bar Mosque. The church of Santa Maria is located on a hill on the east side of Gunadala, and it is also a place worth visiting. As a major and busy hub of the Kolkata Chennai railway line, the city has developed into a major industrial center. This is the center of Andhra Pradesh, the historical-cultural, political, and educational center. Vijayawada uses the purest form of Telugu.
