History

The origin of this temple has been lost in antiquity. Adi Sankara is said to have visited this temple when he created his Sivananda Lahiri. Srisailam is quoted in ancient Hindu pujas and in the epic Mahabharata. Nandi, Shiva's sacred cow, is said to have confessed at the Mahakali Temple until Shiva and Parvati appeared before him as Malikajuna and Bramaramba.

This temple is one of the 12 sacred jyotirlingas. Lord Rama himself installed Sahasralinga, while Pandavas installed Panchapandava lingas in the temple courtyard. It also gained prominence in the 12th century due to the Sarana and Vacana Sahtia movement led by Barsavana. According to legend, the place where the most famous poet and social reformer Akka Mahadevi (Akka Mahadevi) was saved is said to be one of the Srisailam caves.

Srisailam is a mountain town in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, the seat of the holy Malikarjuna Jyotirlinga and one of the eighteen Shakti Peethas of the goddess Parvati. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, dedicated to Lord Mallikarjuna, is an ancient temple built in the Dravidian style, and its specimens show Vijayanagara architecture. Akka Mahadevi Cave, Pathalaganga, Shikareshwara Temple are other attractions in this place. The Chatrapathi Sivaji Maharaj monument in Srisailam.
